Heritage Brick Deserves A Careful Hand

Edina's chimneys were laid when craftsmanship was the default — Tudors from the twenties, ramblers from the fifties, and a hundred winters of freeze between them. We service them the way they were built: precisely, tidily, and with the paperwork to prove what we found.

  • Condition reports with photographs
  • Licensed, insured, courteous on site
  • Period-correct brick and mortar matching
  • Reachable weekdays, 7 to 7

The Craft

Work Worthy Of The Houses It's Done On

From a Country Club Tudor to a Cahill rambler — the standard doesn't change, only the brick.

Fireplace & Flue Cleaning

Drop cloths first, shoe covers always, and a sealed vacuum running before a single bristle turns. The soot leaves with us — that's the entire point of hiring it out.

  • Firebox, damper and shelf detailed
  • Flues brushed to bare tile or steel
  • White-glove protection throughout

Free Inspections & Reports

Every flue in the stack examined and photographed, with the verdict explained on the spot — free, no theater. The written report a buyer or insurer can hold runs $149, on request.

  • All flues covered in a single visit
  • Findings photographed, not described
  • $149 closing-ready report on request

Heritage Tuckpointing

Century-old joints want mortar that moves like the original, not modern cement that cracks the brick around it. We blend to the period — color, hardness and profile.

  • Mortar analyzed and matched to era
  • Joints struck in the original profile
  • Repairs that disappear into the wall
Preserve the brick

Rebuilds & Draft Correction

When frost has had the final word, we take the stack down to sound courses and lay it back true — sized and terminated so the fireplace actually draws.

  • Partial and full rebuilds, matched brick
  • Flue height and sizing corrected
  • Smoke problems solved at the source
Discuss a rebuild

Caps, Dampers & Downdrafts

Tall trees and taller rooflines make Edina a downdraft town. The right cap, a top-sealing damper and a corrected termination turn a moody fireplace reliable.

  • Caps fitted per flue, screened stainless
  • Top-sealing dampers cut winter heat loss
  • Downdraft diagnosis and cure
Calm the draft

Water Intrusion & Crowns

Every stained ceiling starts as one hairline path through crown, flashing or brick face. We trace the route water actually takes and close it — permanently, and provably.

  • Crowns recast with slope and drip edge
  • Flashing renewed at the roofline
  • Breathable repellents, never paint
Trace the leak

Gas Log & Insert Venting

Keep the original surround, retire the ash shovel. We ready the flue, set the liner and damper for a vented log set or insert, and leave the paperwork inspectors like.

  • Liners sized for logs and inserts
  • Draft verified and documented
  • Original mantels left untouched
Go gas gracefully

Hearths, Surrounds & Mantels

Interior masonry is furniture-grade work. Fireboxes relaid in firebrick, surrounds refaced in brick or stone, hearth extensions brought quietly up to code.

  • Fireboxes rebuilt in proper firebrick
  • Brick and stone surround refacing
  • Hearth extensions to clearance code

The Quiet Ways An Edina Chimney Complains

Older masonry rarely fails loudly. It leaves notes — and the earlier they're read, the smaller the invoice.

  • Mortar joints turning to shadow linesRecessed, crumbly joints on the weather side — the wall is asking for pointing before frost asks harder.
  • A tea-colored ring on the ceilingWater is riding the stack into the plaster. The stain grows every thaw until the path is closed.
  • Smoke that shoulders back insideDowndraft, undersized flue or a blocked cap — a diagnosis, not a lifestyle to accept.
  • Salt-white bloom across the brickEfflorescence: minerals delivered by moisture that's already touring the inside of the wall.
  • Brick faces resting in the garden bedFreeze-spall in progress. The wall is shedding its skin one winter at a time.
  • A damper that grinds or won't seatRust or debris from higher up the flue — and a chimney breathing your furnace heat all winter.
  • No report on file, everA house this good deserves paperwork on its chimney. Most have none — a free inspection and a $149 report fix that.

Fair Questions

Asked Across The Southwest Metro

Is the inspection really free?

It is. A certified technician spends the hour on your chimney and hands over his judgment on the spot — no charge, no strings, not a marketing visit priced to be earned back in the repair bill. Want it in writing with the photographs? The documented condition report is $149, prepared only on request.

Can you match the masonry on a Country Club Tudor?

That's the work we like best. The twenties builders used brick sizes, bonds and mortar tones that today's yard stock doesn't carry. We source compatible brick, blend the mortar to the original color and hardness, and point in the period profile — so the repair reads as upkeep, not surgery.

How often does a fireplace need cleaning here?

Once per face cord burned, or yearly for a fireplace in steady rotation. Many houses in this part of the metro run two or three flues up a single stack — the furnace's included — and each keeps its own schedule. The free visit sorts all of them at once.

Why does smoke curl back into the room some days?

Mature trees, steep rooflines and heavy winter air can push a marginal flue backwards. It's an equation, not a mystery — flue height, diameter and termination each have a fix, and one of them will hold the answer for your fireplace.

Can our wood fireplace take gas logs?

Usually, and elegantly. We confirm the flue's condition, set the right liner and damper arrangement, and prepare the surround — the original mantel stays exactly where the twenties left it.

What's the white residue on our brick?

Efflorescence — mineral salts escorted to the surface by water moving through the wall. Wiping it off treats the symptom; closing the moisture path that carried it is the actual repair, and finding that path is inspection work.

Do you work on interior fireplaces and mantels?

Yes — fireboxes relaid in firebrick, surrounds refaced in brick or stone, hearth extensions brought to clearance code, mantels reset level. Interior masonry is finish carpentry's cousin, and we behave accordingly indoors.

What hours do you keep?

Weekdays from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening. Weekends are for our own hearths.
